Development Log:

Overview:

This game is called “Wizard: No Way Home”. It is about a wizard who is trying to find her way home. In the process, she goes through different obstacles and challenges and meets many monsters. 

The player can collect coins to increase their score. In addition, in certain levels, the player is able to grab items to enhance their abilities (being able to kill monsters or dashing away).

In Level 1, the player has to go through the jungle and get past the red traps in the cave. The player can climb up vines to collect magical gems.

In Level 2, the player falls into the bottom of the cave and also needs to navigate through the red traps. In this level, the player is able to pick up the boots and the wand to aid her in the following levels. Here, bat monsters are introduced and the player can use the wand to shoot fireballs at it.

In Level 3, the player gets sent up into the sky and needs to fight the bats that are flying around outside. The player also needs to dodge the cannon bullets as they try to get to the next level.

In Level 4, the player enters a giant’s house. The player needs to find the keys to open the doors while avoiding or killing the spiders and bats in the house. The player will find a portal gun which will be used in the next level.

In Level 5, the player needs to use the portal gun to reach the end. There are cannons and spiders in this level.

All of the levels have checkpoints around so that the player can respawn to the checkpoint if they die.

Summary of play tests:

Week 1:

  1. Level design is completed and added into the game (platforms)
  2. Player can move around and jump
  3. The player character sprite is made
  4. Start menu was added

Week 2: Beta Testing (Feedback)

  1. Player gets stuck onto the Tilemaps
  2. Player goes through the Tilemaps
  3. When lower than a certain height value, the player dies
  4. Vibe doesn’t match (music and background image)
  5. Difficult to navigate since the levels are big

Week 3:

  1. The player doesn’t get stuck on the Tilemaps anymore
  2. Some Tilemaps were too small and had too much details so we removed it
  3. Checkpoints are added so that the whole level doesn’t restart once the player dies
  4. Portal gun was added to level 5
